State Director for Paid Family Leave

San Francisco, CA, or Washington D.C., United States Full-time Allows remote

PL+US is a bold new organization with a single mission: win paid family leave for everyone in the United States. Our strategy layers public advocacy and accountability campaigns with excellent communications and digital grassroots engagement to make sure everyone in the US has the opportunity to be with their families when they need them most.

Paid family leave is poised to be the next huge movement and policy victory in America. There's exciting movement in companies, cities, and states, but 114 million people still have no access to paid family leave.

We’re looking for a creative, inspired State Director to design and run our local, state, and national political strategy for 2018 and beyond.  As our State Director, you’ll go deep on our single issue, and use your imagination and strategic prowess to find the power levers that most effectively advance paid leave for every American.

This role is perfect for a seasoned professional who is ready to spread your wings to build and run a multi-layered legislative strategy from the ground up with a dynamic and experienced team that’s in it to win.

 About you:

    • You’ve run and won a wide variety of public policy campaigns that included top-tier media, grassroots power and storytelling, digital engagement, and movement partnership. You’ve moved policy through legislature, and worked on a couple of electoral campaigns. You understand field strategy.
    • You know how to leverage and grow political power. You follow politics - know which races are exciting in 2018, can name key legislative leaders and their personal backgrounds, and know who their important donors and advisors are. You bring your own set of valuable networks.
    • You deeply value movement relationships and partnerships.  No issue wins based on the work of a single organization, and paid family leave is a part of a broad issue landscape that includes hundreds of organizations.  You know how to add meaningful value to coalition work and how to work in authentic partnership with key movement stakeholders.
    • You have a deep commitment to equity and inclusion.  You understand why it’s problematic that companies offer men less paid leave than women. You get why the fact that FMLA doesn’t apply to siblings and grandparents can especially hurt communities of color. When you hear “family leave for everyone in the United States,” you understand the deep community engagement and fundamental issue re-centering necessary to achieve that goal. You have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and anti-oppression.
    • You’re an optimist and a risk taker.  Where others say “this can’t win” you say “how could this win?” Then, you use your smart, strategic, open mind to build the plan to get there. You fully commit to the work, and if it fails, you brush off, learn, and tackle the next thing.
    • You’re experienced and successful in a startup environment.  You’re excited about partnering deeply with a small team to create something new, and you love the rapid learning and growth that happens in a startup environment. You know how to build efficient and lasting systems.
    • You’re kind, to others and to yourself.  We’re building a team that’s smart, fun, fast, supportive, passionate, and collaborative. That starts with people who are truly delighted and challenged by the work, and know how to bring their best selves to it every day.

About the job:

  • Develop and implement the short- and long-term campaign strategy that will grow the power to win paid family leave at the state and national level.
  • Cultivate and maintain key movement and coalition relationships including with individuals and groups with a wide range of political and social views.
  • Develop and activate thought leaders and legislative advocates.
  • Be our in-house expert on public policy and politics.
  • Coordinate legislative and grassroots engagement strategy with our campaign and media teams.
  • Support organizational and campaign fundraising.
  • Represent PL+US with legislatures, media, partners, and funders.
